Position Summary

The VP of Development is responsible for conceptualizing, developing, and executing a comprehensive fund development program including creating meaningful and multiple opportunities for funders to invest in Bright Pink’s mission and programmatic priorities at all giving levels. In partnership with the CEO, the VP of Development assures that the organization’s culture, infrastructure, programs, and procedures support fund development and vice versa.

The VP of Development is a member of the senior leadership team and maintains an expert focus on both the art and science of fundraising.

Essential Functions

  • Meets or exceeds total annual fundraising and development goals across three key areas:
    • Individual giving, including peer to peer activities, endurance program fundraising, annual giving, and major giving. This position maintains a robust major donor portfolio.
    • Institutional giving, including healthcare and pharmaceutical companies as well as private foundations that support Bright Pink through grants and sponsorships. This position will manage relationships with institutional funders and prepare compelling and informative proposals, decks, and reports as needed.
    • Corporate giving, comprised of mid-to-large sized companies who champion our mission 1) externally through brand communications, cause-marketing, and digital campaigns, and/or 2) internally through employee education and fundraising initiatives. This position ensures corporate revenue goals are met or exceeded.
  • Develops a balanced funding mix of revenue sources and solicitation programs tailored to the needs of the organization that will enable it to attract, retain and motivate donors and fundraising volunteers.
  • Establishes performance measures, monitors results, and helps the CEO and board evaluate the effectiveness of the organization’s fund development program.
  • Keeps informed of current trends and issues in the philanthropic sector as well as challenges and opportunities in Bright Pink’s fund development efforts. Communicates this information proactively with the CEO and board.
  • Ensures compliance with all relevant laws and regulations, maintains accountability standards to donors, and ensures compliance with code of ethical principles and standards of professional conduct for fundraising executives.
  • Ensures establishment of and compliance with the organization’s own fund development and philanthropic principles, policies and procedures.
  • Appropriately represents Bright Pink and the CEO to donors, prospects, board members, and others.
  • Helps identify, cultivate, recruit, train and develop fundraising staff, volunteers, and leadership. Supervises and manages development staff.
  • Gets the best thinking and involvement of each board member and each fundraising volunteer; and, stimulates each one to give his/her best. Works with the CEO and senior leadership to make the board function effectively in fund development.
  • Assures sound fiscal operation of development function including timely, accurate and comprehensive implementation of development revenue and expense budgets, reporting, monitoring and implementation.
  • Assures accurate maintenance of donor and prospect records, gift management systems, and informational reports.
  • Assures design and implementation of cultivation, acknowledgment and recognition programs.


Minimum of 10 years of fundraising experience in a professional position with demonstrated experience in managing and implementing a comprehensive fund development program and a proven track record of success in meeting or exceeding fundraising budgets and goals.

  • Strong editing skills, including ability to help program staff communicate their work to donors in a clear and concise manner
  • Demonstrated experience and confidence in asking people to contribute time and money
  • Strong administrative and organizational skills, with the ability to multi-task, set goals, and prioritize workload
  • Comfort in a deadline-driven environment
  • Willing to challenge the standard thinking with new ideas, new approaches, and new solutions
  • Effective, collegial communicator who can collaborate with all levels of staff
  • Professional integrity, drive, and ability to effectively represent and promote Bright Pink to external partners with professionalism and tact
  • Knowledge and experience in the following areas is required: the nature and dimensions of philanthropy, ethics, motivations for giving and volunteering, research and cultivation practices, standard fundraising techniques including face-to-face solicitation, proposal writing, special events, telephone solicitation, and direct mail; and development office functions including gift processing, prospect and donor histories, and fundraising reporting
  • Must be willing to maintain a flexible work schedule including evening and weekend hours and occasional travel
  • Expert proficiency with MS Office programs, including Excel, Word and PowerPoint
